BBC Introducing: Music Video Project

BBC INTRODUCING MUSIC VIDEO PROJECT

I worked with Access to Music students over a year to produce four music videos in partnership with BBC Introducing in Norfolk. My students acted as A&R (picking artists from the Norwich college), music video directors (coming up with a creative concept for each video and making/sourcing props) and then lit, filmed, edited and promoted the finished videos with the fulsome help of the BBC Introducing team. Student musicians were then interviewed on BBC Radio, while a short profile piece by one of my journalism students was posted on the BBC Introducing blog.

My favourite video involved making a white box sculpture inspired by Rachel Whiteread’s 2005 ‘Embankment’ installation in Tate Modern’s turbine hall. Students collected empty boxes from local shops, raided their sheds for white paint and built a structure to surround musician Miles Otto’s keyboards and gear. Visual artist Liam Roberts very kindly donated his services for the day, projecting his visuals onto the boxes. The end result looked incredibly effective on what was essentially a budget of no pence.
